REVENUE LEADERSHIP
Fractional CRO vs VP of Sales
Choose a VP of Sales when the central need is leadership of the sales team. Consider a fractional CRO when the mandate also requires coordination across go-to-market choices, revenue operations, channels and customer handoffs. Titles do not replace explicit decision rights.
What is the difference between a fractional CRO and a VP of Sales?
A VP of Sales usually leads sales execution and the sales team. A CRO mandate can span the broader revenue system, including marketing alignment, customer success, pricing and revenue operations. Fractional describes the engagement arrangement. Compare the actual authority and responsibilities in the role, because titles alone do not establish scope.
Compare responsibility and presence
List the decisions, people-management duties, required availability and cross-functional dependencies. A fractional role is suitable only if the agreed coverage can meet those demands. A VP of Sales can have a broader remit when explicitly assigned; no title guarantees scope.
Compare total commitments
For a permanent role, evaluate compensation, hiring and transition requirements. For fractional work, evaluate fees, coverage, client implementation resources and handover. Confirm actual terms rather than using unverified salary tables or assuming a standard exit clause.
Scope and exclusions
This service is not outsourced prospecting, commission-only closing or a stand-alone sales workshop. It does not guarantee revenue. A company that needs daily executive coverage should evaluate a full-time or interim role.
